About the Book Series
The uQamata Cultural Series is a vibrant, four-part illustrated children's book series written in isiZulu and translated into Sesotho, Venda, and isiXhosa. These stories follow the adventures of uQamata, a spirited six-year-old girl, as she learns about traditional rites of passage, including Umemulo, Amalobolo, Umhlonyane, and Utsiki. Each book is designed to reintroduce these important cultural practices to young readers in a way that is engaging, joyful, and affirming.

What Inspired the Series
This series was inspired by my daughter, Qamata. I wanted her to see herself in the stories she reads — not just visually, but spiritually and culturally. Witnessing the lack of indigenous representation in children's literature, particularly in books written in our indigenous South African languages, motivated me to fill this gap by sharing our stories in our own languages.
Who the Series is For
The uQamata Cultural Series is perfect for early-phase learners, families raising children in African households, educators, and cultural organizations dedicated to decolonizing literature and curricula. It’s also ideal for anyone looking to reconnect with or introduce young children to traditional African values and rites.
Vision Behind the Series
Through this series, I aim to preserve and pass on indigenous knowledge systems in a way that feels both natural and exciting for children. My dream is for these books to be used in schools, libraries, and homes across South Africa — and eventually throughout the continent — as vital tools for cultural education.

I believe that literature should mirror the rich tapestry of our culture. It’s essential for our children to recognize themselves in the stories they read, fostering pride and identity. I hope readers of all ages will come away with a renewed sense of pride in their identity, heritage, and the richness of African traditions. Above all, I want young readers to see that their stories, language, and spiritual heritage are beautiful, powerful, and worth celebrating.
